Irritability and the Menopause
Femal has been shown to support many women through different phases of the menopause.
The menopause may include symptoms such as night sweats, hot flushes, irritability, low mood and insomnia.
After 12 weeks of using Femal,
of women believed that Femal was "very effective" or "effective" during the menopause (results from 373 women) *Elia D et al. Genesis. 2008; 135: 12-15.
Mood swings, which may include irritability, low mood / depression, anger and anxiety for example, are one of the more difficult symptoms of the menopause to define (and to cope with). They may start so subtly that you don’t even notice them. Maybe you put your short temper or lack of patience down to tiredness from lack of sleep (another symptom of menopause).
When you’re in perimenopause (the period leading up the menopause) it may not even cross your mind that these feelings may be due to a hormonal change, as you’re still getting your period and don’t consider yourself menopausal. But the hormone changes start happening years before your last period, and so do the early signs of menopause.4NHS. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/menopause [Accessed December 2018].
So, if you are feeling more anxious than usual, or grumpier with your family or friends, then it may be that it’s all down to hormones. Which can come as a relief for some women who were worried about these new feelings of unhappiness.
There are many ways to improve your mood and better cope with these feelings (which thankfully are usually temporary), including CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) which has shown good results in helping women to understand how their thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions are interconnected, *NHS. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-cbt [Accessed December 2018]. and how to help get them out of a negative thought cycle. Exercise has also been shown to help, as well as keeping a healthy weight. *NHS. Low mood and depression. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/stress-anxiety-depression/low-mood-and-depression/ [Accessed December 2018]. Many women are also interested in how alternative therapies for the menopause can help.*NHS. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/menopause [Accessed December 2018]. ,15Menopause Matters.
